Nels Cline on why he fronts a jazz band in addition to playing for Wilco

I’m sharing this for a few tidbits about what Nels has been up to, though it seems really odd to publish an interview with someone who you never directly quote.

Sometimes when you watch Nels play you have to wonder what planet he’s drifted off to!

I was at this show—it was a great performance on a sweltering night.

If you haven’t heard it already, check out Lee’s latest project, Lee Ranaldo and the Dust. Their album Last Night On Earth is one of my favorites of the year. So far I think Lee has been doing the most interesting post-SY work, though I didn’t spend as much time with that Body/Head album as I would have liked to.

I had planned to see Lee next month, but it turns out it’s the same day I’m headed to New York to see Nels. Priorities, after all!

A new interview with Nels from Tone Concepts they’ve titled “Sound Is Magic.” He offers some great insight about his songwriting process—especially that it’s not as long and elaborate as some may think. Check it out!

Nels discusses his plans for the next few months, including the release of the new Nels Cline singers album, Macroscope, Wilco taking a little bit of a breather after almost three years on the road, and his plans to tour Europe with Medeski, Martin, and Wood in March in support of a live-in-the-studio album.

Let’s hope MMW+C will line up some U.S. dates. I have a hunch we may see Nels playing with the Singers and Julian Lage sometime next year, too. Keep your fingers crossed!

Glenn Kotche really grabbed the attention of my comrades in Carla’s band, not only because of his noticeable skills, but also because of his predilection for playing WEIRD IMPROVISED MUSIC in his spare time.

These two really need to make more WEIRD IMPROVISED MUSIC together.

File this under “Wilco collaborations nobody saw coming.” I wonder what they’ll come up with for the tour closer tonight?

Thank you @NancySinatra for singing “Bang-Bang” and “These Boots Are Made For Walking” w/us tonight.

Wow…a Wilco picture I’ve never seen before. Doesn’t it look like Glenn’s making a face like he forgot to go to the bathroom before they started shooting?
