I wanted to share this drawing that my 4 year old son drew of Nels Cline last night, which I think is a pretty good likeness. Note the attention to detail he used, even remembering to put knobs on the guitar. I love kid drawings.

Sometimes when you watch Nels play you have to wonder what planet he’s drifted off to!

Because I am only slightly obsessed with the Nels Cline Singers — and Nels Cline and the Nels Cline Trio — and have been since a friend played me Interstellar Space Revisited in 2000 (I think)… I offer you this treat.

Enjoy.

An absolutely monstrous version of one of my favorite Singers songs, “Cause for Concern,” in which Scott Amendola seems to channel Animal from the Muppets. This was recorded a few months after I had traveled extensively to see the Singers play throughout the midwest and southeast, and I remember watching this video endlessly when it was first posted. This was the Singers’ original lineup, with Devin Hoff on bass.

I hope they resurrect this one for their tour next month! It’s been awhile since they’ve played it.

I remember reading somewhere that Nels was more excited that his Jazzmaster was on the cover of Guitar Player than he was about him being on the cover.

This is a great older interview with Nels and definitely worth picking up.

I’m going to this show and would buy this poster! It took a few years of bugging to get them to start doing t-shirts, so hopefully they’ll have posters for the tour next month.

Nels plays with Medeski, Martin, & Wood at the Blue Note in Milan, Italy, last night. Photo by Claudio Romani, copied from a tweet from the Blue Note’s Twitter feed that links to their Flickr stream. Unfortunately, none of the larger and higher quality images there can be embedded. It’s a shame, because there are some beautiful ones up there.

Nels Cline & Julian Lage

Nels and Julian Lage will play the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival on June 28. Saskatoon is really far away from…everywhere, but if it’s in your neck of the woods, check it out!
